80km Long-Haul Transmission: 10G BIDI Optical Modules Enable Intercity Data Center Interconnect
1. Background
As business continues to expand, a major telecom operator (or: enterprise customer) faced growing bandwidth pressure and fiber resource shortages between two data centers located in different cities. To achieve efficient, stable, and cost-effective interconnectivity, the customer needed a solution capable of 80km transmission over a single fiber.

2. Challenges
Fiber Scarcity: Only one pair (or even a single strand) of backup fiber was available between the two data centers, making traditional dual-fiber solutions unfeasible.
Long-Distance Requirement: With a distance of approximately 80km between sites, the optical modules required high output power and excellent receiver sensitivity to ensure signal stability after long-haul attenuation.
Compatibility & Reliability: The solution had to be compatible with major switch brands already in use and meet strict industrial environmental standards.
3. Solution: 10G BIDI 80KM Optical Modules
We provided the 10G BIDI 80KM series (Models: SFP-10G-80BXD / SFP-10G-80BXU). This solution offers the following key advantages:
A. Single-Fiber Transmission, Saving Resources
Utilizing BIDI (Bi-Directional) technology with WDM multiplexing, these modules transmit and receive over a single fiber, saving 50% of fiber resources compared to traditional solutions.
B. Reliable 80KM Transmission
Built with high-performance DFB lasers and APD photodetectors:
Transmit Power: Measured Tx Power > 2dBm, ensuring sufficient launch power into the fiber.
Receiver Sensitivity: Sensitivity as low as -25dBm, with precise LOS assert/de-assert levels (-30.6dBm to -28.5dBm), guaranteeing error-free signal reception after 80km transmission.
C. Matched Pair, Plug-and-Play
BXD (Downstream): TX 1550nm / RX 1490nm
BXU (Upstream): TX 1490nm / RX 1550nm
The modules work as a matched pair with zero configuration required, simplifying deployment significantly.
D. Strict Quality Control & Compatibility
Every module undergoes rigorous real-world performance testing before shipment (see test data below). Test reports show that under 25°C and 3.3V, all key parameters (e.g., Extinction Ratio > 8dB) exceed industry standards, ensuring full compatibility with Cisco, Juniper, Huawei, H3C, and other major brands.
